Calandra H.

Winn-Dixie (Southeastern Grocers)

As a  48-year old mother of 7 and grandmother of 12 plus a job at Winn-Dixie, Calandra had her hands full. She spent her adult years taking care of her family, never doing what she really wanted to do for herself.

“I made sure all 7 of my children graduate high school, but I did not. I started thinking, what if my grandchildren start asking one day if I graduated high school? The answer would have been no, but I decided to change that. I was overwhelmed at how happy they were when their parents told them that I just graduated high school, all that love they showed me was so amazing.

Calandra joined the program through GEDWorks™ and got her GED® diploma on January 6, 2017. She is now enrolling in college to become a Medical Office Assistant. She found the flexibility of GEDWorks™ invaluable:

“I love GEDWorks™ because I was able to study from the comfort of my home, at my own pace. At times it was very challenging and a few times I wanted to give up. I had to keep reminding myself that this was my time to achieve a very important goal in my life. Wow, how amazing my advisor was! I always got a text or email from her asking how my studies were going, asking how can she help. And every test I passed, to get that awesome email saying congrats on passing your test was such an amazing feeling.”

“I am truly proud of what I have accomplished so far and if I can do this at the age of 48 you can as well. Just don’t give up no matter how frustrating you may get at times just trust and believe in yourself that you can do this. Whatever you do please do not give up, you will so proud of yourself when you finish.”

Calandra is now enrolling to earn her associates degree and pursue a job as a Medical Office Assistant. But that’s just the beginning:

“Once I have achieved that goal, I may go for my bachelors degree after that. I am so excited for this journey I am on in my life. Just remember you are never too old to achieve your goals and dreams.”
